Shadowed Memory addresses issues of identity, recollection and memory by combining anonymous shadow portraits with poetic phrases infused with fictitious thoughts and invented scenarios.

Created and designed in collaboration with Dallas designer Randall Hill, Shadowed Memory was fabricated during a June 2005 residency at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York. To complete the work, sixty pages of images and text were printed the following year using Kodak NexPress digital technologies at Padgett Printing, Dallas, Texas.  The pages are bound in a rich Ultra-suede fabric with a blind-stamped titled cover.

The page sequence consist of twenty-five portraits juxtaposed with pages covered with recurring poetic phrases.  The meanings of the phrases vary depending on which words are highlighted.  The portraits were produced using custom-built backdrops assembled from an assortment of found objects and fabrics. The objects and fabrics were specifically chosen to evoke the quintessential personality--the essence--of the person portrayed.

Shadowed Memory was partially funded by Visual Studies Workshop, The National Endowment for the Arts, the Leonard Nemoy Foundation and Clampitt Paper Company.
