Fragmented Questions (2001-2002)
Archival Pigment Prints
This group of images represent the first exhibition of Night Journey created specifically as single narrative framed works on paper for the 2002 solo exhibition at Conduit Gallery in Dallas, Texas. These works become more about remembering and making connections to dreams and less about the experience of being in a dream as portrayed in the earlier room-size installation of images on fabric.
Grant uses the shadow to imply a sense of reality without being real. It allows fabrication of a world and narrative that occurs only in the photograph. The scenarios and spaces portrayed are surrogates for what once was, and now imagined.
The images were created from scanned 4x5 negatives and printed as Giclée Iris prints. Images in the series are now printed by the artist as 47”x35” or 30”x23”” limited edition archival pigment prints on Hahnemühle 308 Rag papers. Edition sizes are 9 and 20 respectively. Each print has a hand-torn white border with a de-bossed signature stamp on front and labeled and hand-signed en verso.
Early images represented in this group were created in a narrower format and are available as archival pigment prints at 44”x22” or 22”x11”.
Night Journey uses the shadow as metaphor to examine the perceptual and psychological aspects of the dream-state and provides a pictorial access to the unconscious.
